The stainless steel hook (carabiner) opens to accommodate a ring or whatever to attach it to the pulley system. For the 1/8” systems, the snap latch in the carabiner will open wide enough to slip probably a 1/4” rope through the opening. Or you may thread the rope through the opening. The latch is useful when attaching to a larger rope or a 1/4” or smaller ring. In the tie down mode both ends are immoveable, and the ratchet makes the line taut to hold whatever is under the line is secured. VBNE1? **Q: will these work with bird feeders?** A: They sure will. As long as your feeder is able to hang in balance on 1 line or has multiple attachment points to keep it stable. **Q: Can I replace the rope with one of my own length** A: Yes.
