At 4% Gluconolactone PHA, the formula is very much on the mild side for GENTLE EXFOLIATION. This is good for many reasons, but especially for sensitive skin. Gluconolactone has anti-oxidant and exfoliating properties that dissolve dead skin cells, improve the appearance of fine lines and discoloration, and can help remove excess oil from skin. Because the molecules in gluconolactone are larger than other acids, they don't penetrate the skin as deeply, which lessens the likelihood of redness and flaking after use. There should be no irritation or dryness, and the addition of Green Tea and Cucumber is both tightening and soothing. However, be cautious using the pads on rosacea or atopic dermatitis. These pads will definitely give skin a brighter appearance and improvement of skin texture. Gluconolactone is naturally produced by animals but can also be produced from corn. NOTE: Gluconolactone is chemically and functionally similar to AHAs (such as glycolic acid), but Glycolic Acid is a small molecule that penetrates skin very deeply and can cause skin irritation, while Gluconolactone does not. For Gluconolactone to be effective for exfoliation, it needs to be between 7% and 12%. These pads are only 4%, which is almost half the lowest effective percentage. Don't expect the same results of formulas with a higher %, but this lower one will still be effective. Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide products can be used safely with Gluconolactone. I've been a recent devotee of AHA, BHA, and PHA products, where previously I was all about Retinol. Now I use them both, but not at the same time and for very different reasons. Exfoliation, resurfacing, and even skin tone vs. wrinkle treatment. No matter what percentage of AHA, BHA, or PHA you use, always wear sunscreen for outdoor protection. And even though PHA is gentler than the other two, it's best to start out by alternating use 3 non-consecutive days a week and gradually increase usage if desired, AND YES IT CAN BE USED EVERY DAY IF TOLERATED. Before you get too excited about NEOSTRATA PHA Renewal Face Pads, with Gluconolactone, Green Tea and Cucumber Extracts, think about what you want from these pads. At 4% Gluconolactone PHA, the formula is very much on the mild side for GENTLE EXFOLIATION. This is good for many reasons, but especially for sensitive skin.
