These are not air tight. Place this far away from where you are sleeping. I believe the manufacturer provides a recommended distance. Also bears can smell you. Dont worry black bears are not aggressive. The point of the can is to prevent bears from eating human food and developong an association between food and humans. You are not in any danger unless you are camping near grizzly bears. Grizzly Bears will kill you just for fun regardless of if you have food with you or not.
