I wish I could hate this stuff
If my review were based on performance alone, there wouldn't be enough stars to express how well Promogran Matrix wound dressings work; but I run a 501(c)3 horse rescue, so I have to deduct points for cost. I paid $11 for each of 10 silver-dollar-sized wound pads, and I'm about to do it again. One of the horses we saved from slaughter came to us with a lesion under his tail. It got infected with E. coli and damaged his tail to the point where the vet recommended amputation. Ralphie would be hard enough to adopt out because he's small and afraid of everything - including flies, so I couldn't imagine how hard it would be to find someone willing to adopt a small, spooky horse with no tail to swish away the flies that terrify him. We've been fighting for a year for Ralphie to keep his tail, which means daily cleaning and dressing, and a lot of trial and error. At the beginning of March, after spending more than $3,500 on dressings for a horse we bailed off a kill lot for less than $500, I bit the bullet and bought a single Promogran dressing (one of the large ones touted as being 19.1 square inches; which means it's about 5" in diameter). I was so pleased with how well it worked, I bought a box of 10.Until Promogran, we'd been making slow, steady progress with adequate dressings, but we'd hit a plateau. The wound just wasn't healing fast enough. Ralphie's been on powerful antibiotics for too long. We needed to kick his healing into high gear. You can see the results for yourself. The tissue is much healthier, the myofibroblasts are contracting the wound edges and pulling them together, and epithelial cells are building a new, healthier surface. In short, Promogran kicked Ralphie's healing from proliferation to maturation in only a few dressings. How do I know it was the Promogran and not just coincidence? We've run out of the magical pads, and healing has stalled again. So, as I prepare to buy a second box of 10 tiny miracle dressings, I keep telling myself that I can invest the hundred bucks and speed up healing by a couple of weeks, or I can spend $100 on a couple of weeks of some other dressings that do a fine job, but don't take wound healing to the next level. One thing I learned after my first Promogran purchase: Cut the dressing to fit only over the wound. I was using the whole dressing and wasting the edges on areas that didn't need to heal - like you would with gauze. I'm sure that's a no-brainer to others; but it took me a minute to figure it out.
