I could not get this to create a spark for the life of me, so wondering if there is some trick to how to strike it** A: I hold the steel in my right hand. Hold the flint in left hand firmly. Char cloth laying on top of flint even with the edge of flint & held in place by thumb. use quick short downward motion with handoff holding the steel against the flint striking only the very edge of flint. Flint edge works best when it is sharp since you are actually shaving off bits of steel which is creating the sparks. Many good YouTube videos which visually demonstrate technique. Once you "get" it you can make sparks with many other materials.
