Review: Colourful, quality, fun paints - They come on a sturdy box, and the paint colours are contained in larger pans. The colours themselves make a very lively combination, not jarring and each one is quite unusual. I tried them out on hot pressed and not paper. Some colours granulated nicely and that was a nice effect. Others push the underlying colour around, again, a pleasing effect. I've yet to find out how much paint is in each pan and which colours I use most. I wish these colours were available in tubes individually as buying a whole set when one runs out would be a very expensive proposition. So, will use for graphics so that I use most of them if not all before I purchase again. In all, a super fun buy.
Review: A mix between gouache and watercolours, all in a lovely green box. - There's a huge amount of hype around these paints, rave reviews and accolades on You Tube. I'm afraid I couldn't resist. They arrived promptly, a nice suprise as they came direct from Japan. The box is quite large 32x20cm ( approx) and a solid card box. In the lid is a chart to fill the paint colours in. It's all in Japenese, except for the numbers. This chart corresponds to the layout/ order of the paints. They are in white trays approximately 4.5x 2.5 cms, and are named in Japenese but numbered. I would definately urge you to fill this chart in, and I've also done a larger one on water colour paper, as it's hard to really see what the colours are, as many are similar in appearance or too dark to see. For example; there appear to be a great many similar reds, but in fact there is a great selection of a wide spectrum. I went for the 36 colours, as I wanted the gold. This box has a super array of colours, they are really good pigment, and a creamy consistency , more like a gouache than traditional watercolours. There is a very slight sheen in the colours, a bit like the sheen you get from coloured inks. The white is very slightly shiny, and the pearlescent white very shiny indeed. There is no silver, but a pewter type colour and a coppery gold. I've really enjoyed playing with these paints, and am glad I went for the larger set. I think they are good value for money, as they are high quality pigmented paints, that can be used as water colours with Lots of water, or a very creamy opaque paint. So a versatile addition to any artist, and a good starter set to someone who is perhaps nervous of watercolours.

## Features

- Contains 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one and 2-octyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one. May produce an allergic reaction.
- [GANSAI TAMBI] It is traditional, Japanese watercolor, developing colors that are based off of those seen in nature. Colors are vivid and opaque, and pans are carefully fill so that the paint is smooth, rather than granulated, and dries with a slight sheen. Individual pans are replaceable.
- [Ink] Unique technology allows for the development of pigment ink that leaves flat-washes easily, while remaining easy to blend. Gansai Tambi ink can be diluted to create a more watercolor-like picture, while still remaining bright and opaque, or can be used as a gauche by limiting water dilution. Ink dries with a slight sheen
- [Brush Dexterity] Gansai Tambi Pans are much larger than typical watercolor pans, giving you the ability to use both small or large brushes quite easily.
- [Ideal Gift Set] Packaged in a simple cardboard box with elegant green washi overlay. Perfect for gifts.
- Kuretake Co., Ltd. founded in 1902 and celebrate 120th anniversary this year, so Kuretake introduced “Art nouveau” tastes into Gansai Tambi new set, which was a trend in Europe back in our year of the establishment. The concept is based in “Art nouveau” though, balanced colors are chosen, and you can create any illustration only with this set.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Are these of a professional quality as far as lightfastness and pigment quality?**
A: According to the write-up on the underneath of the lid of the box where these water colours reside (the only bit I could understand as the rest is written in Japanese), they conform to ASTM D 4236 so, yes, they ought to be lightfast. The pigment is lovely, really vibrant and gorgeous. The pans of colour are also huge, no doubt due to Asian brushes usually being bigger and thicker, like the Calligraphy ones for example, than Western ones, so you get a lot for the money you're paying for these. Please refer to this link for confirmation: https://www.amazon.com/Kuretake-MC2036V-Gansai-Tambi-Color/dp/B00KERVO72?SubscriptionId=12NVBQD5T6H4YCPVYZ82&tag=typeright-ae-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B00KERVO72

**Q: Will these paints show up on black paper?**
A: yes and no, it does with a thick layer of the paint

**Q: Can these paints be used as gouache, rather than watercolour?**
A: A watercolourist may find them to be "opaque" but someone who works with gouache will find them very transparent. Gansai is not truly like either watercolour or gouache in the Western sense, and is pigments in a glue binder (which varies by colour and by brand) used as a convenient stand in for hand grinding pigments and mixing with glue in Japanese Nihonga, like a practice paint I suppose.

**Q: Please how long does it take to arrive from Japan to UK? Thank you**
A: Thank you for your question. It is a little different from the setting of Amazon, but it is as follows. After receiving the order...Expedited delivery ; from 6 days to 10 daysStandard delivery ; from 2 weeks to 3 weeks(if it passes through customs smoothly )

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Stunning Colours with Unmatched Opacity and Smoothness
*by H***Y on 1 September 2025*

I absolutely love the Kuretake Gansai Tambi paints – for me, they almost sit between watercolour and gouache, which makes them really versatile. The opacity and smoothness are something else, and the colours have such a rich, vibrant finish. The glittery metallics in this set are gorgeous and add a special touch to any piece. I’ve collected all the palettes in the range because each one feels unique and inspiring. They’re professional quality paints that are simply a joy to work with.
