Dove below the water, the check valve worked fine. I wish the snorkel were taller, sometimes while looking around I'd dip the tip in the water. The retention clip kinda holds the snorkel parallel to the water when you're floating, rather than straight back (up when facing down) behind the ear... which would put the most of the snorkel above as water. Note as well, I've never done this before, these are my observations based on my experience. I did find clipping the retention clip to the place where my strap splits as it goes behind my head.
