(I know, I know... the tripod is only rated for a ton, but it proved to be much stronger.) I'm pleased with the performance so far, after three lilacs. I put 1 ΒΌ" galvanized pipe on the tripod for legs, capped off with floor flanges. The whole arrangement survived my 190 lb weight on the pull chain, several times. I'm learning as I go, finding that you have to wet the ground a day ahead of time to loosen things up. Then you take a half-inch pipe attached to a garden hose to wash a little chipmunk tunnel under the bush. ...Much easier than beating a hole through with a rod. Then you pull a piece of hanger wire attached to a light chain, which is followed by your heavier chain or cable (with only one hook). Pull it completely through under the root ball. Hook your heavier chain/cable to the hoist, and pull slowly. The two hoists are very similar and both work well, in case you're shopping around. I think the HFreight one was a few bucks cheaper. Check out my video for a look at the hoist in my shop and in action. I have the hoist on a DIY gantry, allowing me to move it around and move things in and out of my trucks. I haven't used it for things that weigh over 500 lbs, but it's rated for much more weight than I use it for. This is a very simple, manual tool. Attach the hook and pull the chain for lifting. Pull the chain the other way for lowering.
