Unhook the top lever from the handle, twist it to 90 degrees to the pot handle, wiggle it a little and it comes apart. By then I realised it was a good idea to learn how to cook with it and read the recipe book. Weighed and measured the ingredients and water as per the recipe book, you do need scales and a jug measure, do not second guess. Put the seal around the outside rim of the top, and put together back on from the 90 degree angle and twist to the pot handle and hook. Take the weight off the lid and put aside close by (not on the heat - it hurts when you pick it up), put pot on high heat, when steam starts to come out of the top nozzle, put the weight back on and wait! Within a couple of minutes, there will be a very loud hiss of escaping steam, at which the first time experienced can lead to requiring clean underwear. Turn the heat down to between medium to low, if too high, there will be another escape and whoosh, but don't worry, just turn the heat slightly lower. Important point, Cooking time starts from the first hiss escape of steam, do not over cook by even a couple of minutes, (you can experiment later if you want) stick to the recipe is recommended. Wait till the pot cools before attempting to open, do not take the weight off immediately before doing this, there is a loud escape of steam, plus liquid from the contents which make a mess of your cooking area, stove and any other pots, pans, plates etc. nearby, requiring cleaning - not that I would know this being a man who doesn't need to read the very clear instructions! Also stove top pressure cooker is most suited for gas range not electric. Though you can use it on an electric but you may need to switch burners when it lets off steam to an unused cooler one to adjust temp faster. **Q: Has anyone used separators with the 5L cooker?
