Perlite can be used to open up the structure of composts to make it more free-draining. However vermiculite can be used as a seed covering over fine seeds in a seed tray, as well as a compost additive to help with drainage. **Q: Is the bag made from plastic or paper? Asbestos has never been detected in any of our Vermiculite and we also ensure that we purchase from reliable sources where appropriate Asbestos protocols are in place. Vermiculite is sometimes associated with Asbestos because of an incident that took place many years ago in the US.
