It made a noticeable difference in the cutting ability of each knife. The honing steel did well to keep my blades sharpened as I cut. It is important to note the angle in which you sharpen -- of which there are plenty of tutorials online -- otherwise you can do more harm than good. With that said, it was quick to pick up on. Honing steels are not knife sharpeners, so if your blade is dull, don't expect this to bring it to a brand-new edge.
