(He was able to literally lift the lid off the last cat feeder I had) It says it serves 5 meals but it's actually 4 as one is always open, so you can't set it to open at a later time. Also to press the button to move to the next meal manually, you have to lift the lid, which is a bit awkward because you can't do it in front of the cat or he'll get at all the meals when you lift the lid. When I am going to bed I fill one empty tray with ice. My dog has Cushings Disease and wants to eat every 3 hours including through the night. The first feeding is at 11:30 pm. The food stays cool enough although to be safe i eliminate the meat in the last 2 trays that open at 2:30 and 5:00 am. I have had no problems. So far works extremely well and I am finally able to sleep through the night again. Wish I had known about this product a very long time ago! **Q: My cats need five feeds a day, will I have to re program the machine every day. I am hoping that all I have to do is re fill it!** A: No, you don't have to re-program the machine every day. I hope we're talking about the PetSafe 5-tray machine. Because this 2-tray device isn't going to work for you. I have the 5-tray PetSafe product and it's worked very well. (1) Program the current time of day.(2) Program up to 9 different programs (no idea why you'd need that many)In your case, you'd program 4 different set times. Remember, that 1 of the trays is already open, hence no need for a timer.Your 4 programmed times will rotate the remaining 4 hidden trays at the chosen time. So, yes all you have to do is plop some food into the trays each day and you're set. My cat has not managed to open it either, so as far as I'm concerned it's cat proof enough. Good luck. **Q: Can a Dog turn this unit over, and get to all of the Food...** A: This is a very small, very lightweight plastic feeding system and my dog was quickly and easily able to turn it over, slide it around the floor, and attempted to play with it like a dog toy. What's worse, the single AA battery is exposed once installed in the back of the unit (no cover... it could just pop out), so if a dog is mishandling this feeder it could end up eating a AA battery. Best to use this with a CAT or very small dog or puppy only. **Q: How long do the batteries last? Does it eat batteries fast?** A: I have 2 of these and I just changed my batteries for the first time since getting the product ~2.5 years ago. Both feeders batteries died within ~1 month of each other. This is not one of them. The puppy needs feeding 6 times a day. He gets his first feed early on, but the rest are from this little gadget. No, he's not on his own all day. Far from it. But the great thing about this is that it will deliver each food ration at exactly the time you programme it to. No forgetting..has he had 3 feeds or has he had 4? And if you do pop out for a couple of hours, he still gets his grub. The other day he was sleeping next to it, with his paw resting on it....waiting for it to whirrrr open. Personally, I wouldn't use this for wet food. It'll go off, especially if it's warm. But for dried food, it's a winner. It would be fabulous for cat owners who plan to go away for the weekend/night too. It's battery operated so no problem having to plug it in, or risk of high voltage. As for features, well programming couldn't be simpler. In fact, I lost the instructions, but it was pretty easy to work out. It's a bit of faffing about to keep changing the times, so just decide on a regular set of times and stick to it. Even if you want to reduce the meals later on, as your animal gets older, it doesn't matter if an empty drawer pops open. But you can "suspend feeding" at a particular time if you want. The white rotating food tray is really simple to take out and clean, but when you put it back make sure it seats properly or it won't rotate. It's not difficult, you'll feel it drop nicely into place. It does make a whirring sound but that won't stop a hungry pet once they realise that some grub is on offer! Sturdy? Well, my pup has managed to demolish just about every toy we give him. But he can't break into this, even though his sensitive nose knows there is food inside it. Plus it is heavy enough not to be pushed about all over the place.
