Niacin can be used to balance a folate overload on the system. In some people with compound heterozygous MTHFR, too much folate will bottleneck in the Methylation cycle causing a type of panic attack feeling (rapid heartbeat, chest tightness, dizziness, mild shortness of breath) and niacin can help process the folate and almost immediately resolve this issue. So it doesn’t get rid of the folate, it just helps it process it through alternative pathways… (as I understand it via my functional medicine doc.) If I have eaten a large amount of folate rich foods such as fresh greens, oranges and seeds in a particular day, I can almost guarantee I will be woke up in the middle of the night with one of these panic attacks.
