This is a piece of original artwork by Melissa Mule consisting of acrylic, wood, wire and vintage dress pattern on canvas. This 32 inch by 48 inch canvas is ready to hang, with a wire on the back. Because my paintings have a lot of texture, the most commonly asked question I get from patrons is "Can I touch it?" The answer is Yes! This conversation piece is safe to touch gently, because the most fragile parts are encapsulated in a protective and versatile polymer. That said, this piece still has an ephemeral quality with the vintage paper and fabric texture. The subject is a colorful pink, purple, blue and brick red image of the female body, drawn from life. The paint has a gestural, thick quality. I have used a "broken" (cut) vintage Vogue dress pattern to show pressure points (areas of a woman's body that are closely examined). The dress patten gives the image a neutral background with the figure jumping from the canvas in the form of the female figure in bright color. The parallel between the way the body is treated and how a woman is judged emphasize the way women are criticized for failure to measure up or even attempt to conform to societal norms. Her strength is represented with the microstructure of iron. This iron has flakes of graphite within it that allows the iron to be more malleable under stress and withstand breakage. My educational background is materials science engineering. The focus of this study is to determine bulk properties of materials by considering microscopic effects and circumstances. When studying the history of a materials' manufacture, I often am led to consider the effects that comparable circumstances have on our emotional strength. This is how we are made tougher. This painting is of a woman that inspires me.
