Measure before buying. This product is NOT universal and will NOT work on all banisters and posts. Clamp not designed for outdoor use. From the Manufacturer No one likes to put screw holes in their fine woodwork. In many cases this can be avoided by using our clamps. These solid wood clamps will work with square posts in any combination to ensure proper and secure mounting of our gates. Post sizes must be 3 ¾" or smaller in width. Sold separately from gates. Review: Made my life so much easier ! - I have a very wide (7 inches at the base) tiered post at the top of the stairs this made traditional installation of a baby gate impossible even if I wanted to drill into the post ( which I didn't ) the bottom is much wider than the middle and top so I would have been very limited in my choice of gate . I bought a pair of these brackets , knowing the included bolts wouldn't be long enough for my setup I ran to home Depot and got some longer bolts . I was able to stain these brackets to match my posts and then put some foam on the inside where the bracket meets the post to avoid scratches and most importantly got to securely install the gate of my choice . They're secure and holding the gate nicely . Highly recommend if you have an odd sized post like I do.

I have a very wide (7 inches at the base) tiered post at the top of the stairs this made traditional installation of a baby gate impossible even if I wanted to drill into the post ( which I didn't ) the bottom is much wider than the middle and top so I would have been very limited in my choice of gate . I bought these without measuring, just knowing I had to install on bannisters at the top of our stairs. Unfortunately fitting these onto the bannisters made the opening too narrow for the gate itself, so I ended up having to drill into the biggest spindles at the top. Total bummer because I’d already painted these to match the wood! They’re great quality if they fit your dimensions.
