They can be removed completely but it is impossible to vary the height otherwise. It's really heavy and gets mega hot so make sure u have some extra protective gloves! **Q: looking for a grille to put the fire ON, but online can't tell the difference between grille and grill. Could this be used to hold a fire? Thanks** A: You could certainly light a fire on this grill. However it is intended for BBQ use.
