I had it shaved down with a blade type shaver in a doctor's office but it came back. I used a blade type shaver a couple of time myself and it came back. I then bought this rasp and again used a blade type shaver and gently finished with this rasp. Hasn't come back for 2 years. **Q: Is this better than the "Ped Egg"?** A: In my opinion, it is so much better (in every way) than Pedegg. Cuts down the time and effort by minimum of 50%. You don't even have to prep the skin like soaking and softening. Just go at it whenever the mood strikes and be done with it in about 5 ~ 10 min. **Q: does this work on wet feet** A: This is the kind of foot plane they use in the shops for professional pedicures... on WET feet or least feet that have soaked in warm water. I prefer using it on wet feet because the skin being scrubbed off doesn't fly all over the place like it does with dry feet. You just have to use common sense & not over do it... a nice smooth movement as opposed to a put all the elbow grease you can into it kind of movement. You will be stunned at how much dead skin comes off. As a sufferer of hyperkeratosis I have struggled with very hardened skin on my feet and to lesser extent fingers. I have coped with the pain since my teens and I am now in my late 40's. Hardcore prescriptions creams have minimal effect. On private health I was recommended a glass file (which was a waste of time) and a potent pill worked but had serious side effects (making my lip crack and bleed). I currently use a rotary tool with a podiatry burr with some success but not enough to change my attitude to hiding meet :-) This product is a game changer (AND i don't use these words lightly) ! With minimal effort on the first try, I was able to reveal what my feet should look like. I now need to buy some flip flops !!! The amazing thing is that it is gentle enough to be used by anybody and not just chronic sufferers. The coarse blade is fast, effective and controlled by the pressure you apply. On the basis of this result I also bought the Microplane Foot XL which has a buffer blade that is an effect post-smoother that is so light that it could conceivably be used to exfoliate your skin. The Foot XL also has the same coarse blade (interchangeable) as the colossal but is much smaller. It's like magic. Just gently sand it against rough spots on your feet and it brings out the soft pink skin underneath. Remember, go very easy until you get used to it - you can always sand more but you cannot sand less as I found out the hard way going too deep on a couple of spots, which hurt! That said, for calluses this is the best thing ever as it shreds them down in no time, doesn't get blunt and is cleaned in a flash by just tapping it out. But i have struggled with scratchy, snagged, unsightly hard skin on my feet for years (TMI!). I'm someone who loves wearing flip flops as soon as it is remotely not cold, lovely airy feet! But this comes with the downside of getting dry, cracked skin. They feel horrible against sheets in bed, they would snag against blankets, and we're just gross really, and I could never wear my bare feet with pride like some soft-soled people. But, seriously, after one careful session with this micro plane device left my feet no longer in need of hiding away! They feel smooth and silky soft, and I can't stop looking at them and rubbing them against things that would formerly have made me wince. Also, I can now proudly put my bare feet up on a foot stool and not worry who is viewing my soles! I was so impressed that I did go back for another little session the next evening, whilst watching the tele I had another little go....a bridge too far I'm afraid, and even though I thought I was being super cautious, the next day the ball of my foot was feeling a little tender. But today it's fine. So as other reviewers have done before, I would definitely caution you to go very easy at first. Actually I thought the reviews were made up when I first read them as every single review seemed to warn of this danger that I thought the manufacturers must have fabricated them all to boost sales but felt this duty to warn potential customers how to use the thing correctly. But I thought, what hell and bought it anyway. We have a very effective Parmesan cheese/garlic grater made by the same company, why not feet? I have already recommended this to my poor brother, who is similarly afflicted with hard skin on his feet....curse you mother, and your strong genes!
