Yes I know both ends have 1/2 threads, but on the male side, it has a smooth opening that fits exactly on a 1/2" copper pipe. This is a typical design for valves what can be threaded or soldered. I soldered the male side to a copper pipe and the heat melted whatever plastic is holding the ball valve inside. Now it leaks even on fully off position and the lever is loose. Whatever you do, do NOT sweat this valve!
