### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A great overview of his career
*by R***. on August 11, 2012*

First, you must realize that Jerry Lee Lewis exists far longer than the brilliant Sun Record sessions. To get just them, buy the Sun Sessions. This CD does include his major hits for Sun, and rightfully so. He exploded on the scene with "Whole Lot Of Shakin' Going On" in 1957, followed by "Great Balls Of Fire". Many don't remember that this single was backed with a brilliant version of Hank Williams "You Win Again". Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun Records, often backed rock and roll songs with country songs, in order to sell records to both radio stations and markets. Jerry Lee's version is excellent. "Breathless" is well known, thanks to it's inclusion in movies, but often forgotten today is a 1958 movie song, and my personal favorite, "High School Confidential" (I love the intro), which was his last hit, due to the scandal that erupted when it was learned that he'd married his 13 year-old cousin, Myra. Even his great version of Ray Charles' "What'd I Say" in 1961 only made it to #21. Then, Jerry Lee was, musically speaking, dead. Until he recorded "What Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made A Loser Out Of Me)" in 1968. It was country, and made it to #2 on the country charts, and is brilliant. For the next thirteen years, he was at the top of the country charts, and his many hits are included here. I won't go over each one, but they are stunning. Jerry Lee's voice is incredible. I do want to mention one that, the first time I heard it, brought tears to my eyes. "Over The Rainbow", yes, the Judy Garland nugget, was first recorded by him in 1980. Think of the guts that it took to record this song, that has, since 1939, been totally associated with a legend! But, when Jerry Lee made it, he made it his own. Don't get me wrong, Judy is great (yes, I own her version). But, when Jerry Lee sings it, you believe that he is singing it as a man who really wants to know why his dreams can't come true, too! Unbelievable. While you are at it, go ahead and buy the two latest Jerry Lee albums, "Last Man Standing", and "Mean Old Man". The first, from 2006, has some great rock duets on it. The last, from 2010, has more duets, and some mellower songs. Jerry Lee is, by now, in his late 70s, and his voice shows no signs of deterioration. He still sings as strong as ever. I was honored to see him perform in 1999. He walked slowly to his piano. I thought, "This will be awful, he hardly has the strength to get to his stool." As soon as he sat down, he suddenly became charged-up, and began to play. It was as if the stool electrified him. He played a brilliant 45-minute set, ending with "Whole Lot Of Shaking" and "Great Balls Of Fire". Then, he stood up, and became a tired man in his late-60s, being slowly helped from the stage to thunderous applause. Reading 'Unconquered' - a book I highly recommend - this is common for his current concerts. But, buy this CD! You'll be glad you did.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This one is as good as it gets, folks.

I've been a Jerry Lee Lewis fan for most of my life. I've bought more CDs than I'd like to admit. Mostly regurgitations of the same old Sun material. Those recordings are legendary but they only tell half the story. Personally, I've always had a preference for Jerry Lee's Mercury recordings. However, those years of his career are not often anthologized.I first ordered this CD through a mail order catalog shortly after it was released. I had no idea what was on it, I only had the title to go on. I wasn't expecting much. They all claim to be "The Definitive Collection" don't they? This CD surprised me. First, when I looked at the cover. It wasn't a black and white 1957 photo of Jerry Lee Lewis standing on top of his piano? No, it was a wonderful image taken from Jerry Lee's 1970 appearance on The Johnny Cash Show. I was already impressed. Then, I flipped it over and saw that tracklist. I couldn't believe it. It only included 6 Sun recordings. That's it. A smart, yet ballsy move. His Smash/Mercury country hits make up the majority of this collection. The last 2 songs are Jerry Lee's biggest Elektra hits. Hooray for licensing! I immediately ordered a backup copy because I knew I was going to play this thing to death. I've read the other reviews here. Lots of people complaining that there's too much country and not enough rock and roll, which annoys me. Mama said shut your mouth! There's no shortage of Jerry Lee "Just rock and roll" CDs out there. This CD, to date, is the only comprehensive single disc collection to span his career and not just one part of it.it was long past due for a collection like this. Despite the myth, Jerry Lee's career didn't end in 1958. Yes, he was one of the founding fathers of rock and roll - but a decade later, he was for a time, the biggest star in country music. It was time to tell the rest of the story. This CD doesn't have all of the hits but every song on it is a hit. Of the 24 selections offered here, 22 of them made the top 10 on the country charts. The Killer had 30 Top 10 singles and 17 Top 10 albums there. The first six songs on this collection made Jerry Lee Lewis the first artist ever inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, yet despite all the country hits that followed, as of 2021, he's yet to be inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame. This is The Definitive Collection.
