You stick the hose in the water, have the bulb at the other (lower) end of the hose, pumps 3-4 times and the water flows out. Then, if you want, you can take the bulb off, to make the water flow out faster. It will keep flowing without the bulb as long as that end is lower. The only trick is you have to make sure the arrow on the bulb is pointing the way you want the water to go. The arrow is not that easy to see, but it needs to point the right way. Apart from that, this works, and works well. I have two - one for diesel/petro and one for water. To transfer diesel from a 20 litre jerry can to vehicle fuel tank takes minutes - put one end into the jerry can, fit the large robust rubber bulb at other end, 4 of 5 squeezes of the bulb and the siphon starts to run quickly through the broad tube. You need to ensure the valves are the right way round at the two ends of the tube, but that's just common sense. Brilliant, and no risk of spIllage. Also invaluable for spill-free filling of lawn mowers, emptying large water butts eta.
