This paint pourer fit my gallon can snugly and easy to insert. As. noted elsewhere you can't use the can's wire handle, but no problem carefully tilting can to pour. Didn't spill a drop. I immediately removed the pourer and rinsed it under running water and it was clean as new. It may be that all gallon cans are not the same exact size but it worked perfectly for me. Very pleased. Review: The BEST paint can guard!!! - I have searched everywhere for these in the stores and haven't been able to find them. I was SO happy to find them on desertcart (I bought one at a paint store years ago and haven't been able to find them since.) The cans are no longer standard compared to metal cans. Also the tint hole is not the same size as what they use in 5-gal cans (and super hard to unscrew) so you can't use those spouts neither. It's extremely annoying and makes me want to stop buying Behr paint. I like that they are all plastic so they won't rust, but abandoning a size standard that's probably been around for 75-100 years really blows. HD has little pour-spout things they'll give you for free is you ask, they fit on the tint hole, but they are too short and you just end up with paint all over the can in the end and they are pretty worthless. I think they are meant to help you unscrew the cap but the plastic is way too soft and it has never worked for my unless I just put the cap on 10 seconds ago. **Q: Can the paint can bale (metal handle) still be used with the shur-line paint pourer in place?** A: For a long time, I have been searching for a gallon paint can spout to fit all types of metal and plastic cans. To my regret I have found none. Therefore, I have attacked the problem from a different approach. Behr makes an empty plastic paint can with a screw top opening in the lid. For this smaller opening they produce a short spout that can be screwed into this area. The pouring from the plastic can is much less messing than pouring without the spout. I went one step further. I cut off the screwing portion of 5-gallon spout, cut off the two little nubs and pushed the remaining part into the short spout mentioned above. I then put some auto body putty where the two parts meet to make the new spout waterproof. The new spout is now easy pouring with no mess. Problem solved. **Q: Can this paint spout be used with lacquers and other non-water-based paint-like products?** A: I've used it with oil based paint with no problem. I haven't tried it with lacquer. The orange and blue big box stores no longer sell this type in the store so I ordered this Shur-Line 06100 from Amazon. To my surprise after placing the old and new spouts side by side I discovered they are the exact model and brand. Every curve, line, etc. matches. See photos 1 and 2. This review is for my use with latex and acrylic paint only. I avoid using oil paint when possible. Both the old and new have Made In the USA stamped in the exact same location. See photos 3 and 4. For whatever reason the new pour spout is not as snug as the old one even with old paint on the old one taken into account. One star is deducted for this. Before pouring each time make sure the spout is firmly seated on the can and it will work just fine. Use two hands on the can and don’t use the handle to pour. Some reviewers commented the spout will get in the way when carrying the can. I agree. Use two hands to carry the can, not by the handle. The alternative is to get a shorter spout. You won’t find a shorter spout the goes around the entire can rim at the big box store (at least in my area) so try Amazon. This spout cleans fairly easy. I use a plastic putty knife to scrape off any dried paint. If you really want to get the spout cleaner follow up with plain water and a green scrubbing pad. I’ve used my old Shur-Line for many, many DIY paint jobs and did not have a problem with dried paint flaking off after giving the spout a decent cleaning even if some paint remained on the spout. Just make sure all loose paint has been removed before starting a new job.
