They are kind of like a soft thick quilt with stuff on the bottom to keep it from moving and slipping on a hard floor. I bought these for a playroom in our basement to help cover our cold cement floor. It's been perfect! I tried vacuuming on it one time and it was okay but I wouldn't recommend it. I also tried sweeping dirt off of it and that was pretty good.
