I first came across this device at the Nick Nairn cook school. It has a very fine probe tip so that the probe can be inserted into meat easily and without leaving a large hole. The thermometer also displays the temperature very quickly. If the thermometer is not used for a while it automatically switches off , hence saving battery power.The thermometer is certainly not cheap, but, in my opinion, one is paying for quality. The supplied paperwork includes a calibration certificate and a booklet advising on how the thermometer can be used (including required internal meat temperatures for rare/medium/well-done steaks)

I have used over the years lots of probes for checking the temperature of what I cook the advantage of the pen is no wire in the oven.Have used it for game beef duck & pork all cooked to our requirements.Can definitely recommend this probe .

I bought this to check the internal temperatures of meat that I cook on a smoker barbecue in my back garden. I have a couple of wireless probe thermometers but I wanted the Thermapen as it offers an easier way to take multiple readings from different items across the grill.It works very well. Getting a temperature reading takes just a few seconds. I take a sterilising wipe with me so that I can clean the probe before moving from one reading to another - this helps prevent cross contamination.Edit: Last weekend I manned the barbecue at my son's School Fete. We used the Thermapen to check that what we were selling had all reached safe temperatures. Given that we sold about 150 burgers and hotdogs I think it was a worthwhile safeguard, and it was quick and easy to perform the checks.
