Had little issue traversing through sand, gravel and mud. ASICS really did a great job creating the sole for this shoe. It’s a somewhat wide toe box allowing for pretty good comfort. It’s definitely on the heavier side for a trail runner but it makes up for it with the added protection you’ll receive from rocks and roots. The appearance is thicker than most running shoes but that’s expected from a trail runner. It’s a very stable shoes despite the high rise. The max cushion comes in handy, I was able to take these on a 6 mile run through Boston and had no fatigue or pain. I have a bad knee and had no issue when wearing these. Like I said I wore these in Boston on pavement, it’s a very versatile shoe if that’s what you need. I wouldn’t make it your primary runner for roads as there’s the possibly of wearing down the studs faster. All in all though these max 2s are great. Pick them up while they last! The soles are amazing and really show their superior grip on wet surfaces. They roll you forward with each stride .
