The knot was in bad spot for the purpose of this item. The item came with a thank you note; and contact info to report any problems. I sent an email to company with photo's of the problem. They took care of it, and my new item was on the way within 24 hours. Now that's customer service. I have not even used the item yet LOL and happy with it so far! Looking forward to using it. I was going to get metal bristle brush, but saw several reports of the metal tines coming off, getting into food, and causing serious problems in people who ingested it. The double-bevel design makes it much more effective at getting between the grates than the other wood scrapers I've tried. On the very first occasion that I used the Bear Claw, one half of the handle (the end you grasp and push) broke off in my hand.Since my grill is porcelain-coated, I continued scraping. As advertised, the Bear Claw scraps the grill without harming the coating. With each usage, grooves were burnt into the scraper and the Claw became more and more efficient at getting deeper into the open area between the slats. For me, this took no more than a dozen times.I'm quite satisfied with its performance.
