It can be against a wall...air comes in the sides then it is expelled thru the top. Fyi mine broke within 2 weeks. I sent it back for full refund thru Amazon. The air was so fresh in my home...because of that that I have ordered the Alen Breathsmart classic that is an older model...I hope it lasts. They do have a lifetime warranty but a new product should not break right away.
