The top portion of the length of cut, closest to the shank, has a left hand spiral, forcing chips down. when using the compression bit, you must ensure the first pass is below the upcut portion of the bit, or you will get results similar to just cutting with an upcut bit; Using a ramp in, plunging into the material over a distance instead of all at once, and a lead in, starting outside the design to get to the pass depth, it will ensure that the entire piece is clean on the top and bottom. Compression bits are designed to cut in a single pass, however, if your machine cannot handle that depth of cut you can cut in multiple passes, as long as that first pass is below the upcut portion of the bit. I am using them in my CNC machine and I can use a faster travel speed, a deeper pass depth and a larger stepover than I thought would be possible with a bit this small. The only issue I have had is that I broke 2 of them by accidentally hitting a clamp. I also ruined one trying to cut some acrylic. It cut the acrylic just fine but I had the speed set wrong and I burned the bit beyond any further use.
