I put it away for a bit and went on to something else but then the book started "calling" to me so I took it out again. This time I couldn't put it down and even went back and re-read certain parts to make sure I understood what the book was saying. I rate this book with some of the finest books I have ever read and I have always been an avid reader, so many, many fine books have gone through my hands and into my mind. I found I cared deeply for the heroine even though I didn't know her, or anyone like her, our lives had no similarity at all. She an American black woman and me a Scottish white woman had no knowledge of each others lives at all. I came to America just after the "Greensboro sit-in" and was stunned to find out that there was this terrible division of white and black people and I started to read their stories. Do not miss this book, it truly speaks of courage and love and compassion. Review: Self Reflection - I was assigned to read this for my English class which made me very neutral in the beginning. Once I started reading I could not stop. Some very important topics of race, classism, and sexism were brought up: issues we still struggle with in 2019. It was also a self reflection of the main character self which can be relatable when it comes to not conforming with society’s norms.
