They will also pick up every air movement, move of your glasses, etc. If you have a fan on, don't expect to be able to hear anything. Worst of all, at a level above 2 (they go to 4) they give an awful screeching if you so much as tilt your head. I was not able to discern a difference in modes. There is a mild beeping when you press the button, but the sound quality, noise reduction, etc never changed for either ear.
