Alessandrini and Concerto Italiano have lived and breathed Monteverdi for over two decades.  This wonderful recording presents one of the most moving interpretations of ‘Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda’ available, indeed, even surpassing Alessandrini’s earlier release from the late 90’s (Madrigali Guerrieri et Amorosi) with the same forces.  The entire disc is cleverly themed, beautifuly sung and superbly recorded.  This is deeply affecting music.  An outstanding achievement.

This exceptional Monteverdi programme boasts the great asset of a wonderful overriding theme, namely Night - the domain of love, concealment, passion, treachery and much more. It would be hard to think of a better baroque composer than Monteverdi to illustrate and express this theme though the unique power and beauty of his music.The sung works, performed by Rinaldo Alessandrini's superb Concerto Italiano ensemble, are selected from the Madrigals, mostly the later Books, and are interspersed with a handful of instrumental Sinfonias from operas and madrigals. The opening Sinfonia, from Orfeo act 3, promises well, introducing the listener to the exceptionally rich texture of the nine-instrument ensemble. This is followed by the familiar 'Hor che'l cielo e la terra' from 'Madrigali guerreri et amorosi', in a vivid performance which forcefully expresses the emotion and melodrama of Monteverdi's music and text. All of the six voices are outstanding, with beautiful voices and expressive power to match. A special mention should go to soprano Monica Piccinini, with a gorgeous voice and showing superb musicianship throughout.The centrepiece is 'Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda', here in an account rich in texture, poetry and drama. Raffaele Giordani is a superbly committed Testo, resulting in exceptionally exciting narrative power. The following polyphonic madrigal, Tancredi's lament 'Vivrò fra i miei tormenti', is just as powerful in its own way. The 'Lamento della Ninfa' is beautiful, the interspersed Sinfonie are rich and expressive throughout, and the closing 'Quando l'alba in oriente' from 'Scherzi musicali' is an unreserved delight.Alessandrini's imaginative concept is still further enhanced by his own evocative booklet essay. Recorded sound is exquisite, and texts and translations are all given. This is an absolutely rivetting Monteverdi programme.
