Review: Good tool if you need one! - Estwing has always had reliable tools over the years, very few complaints in almost 50 years of service. This is on par with their other products. Feels good in the hands, good swing, single or double handed use, works as intended. Should make a good zombie weapon if the need arises, lol! Packable, not overly heavy or cumbersome.
Review: Excellent mid-size soil loosener/rock puller/manythings doer pick. Tough as nails. - Excellent/oddball size ideal for "little" swings and scooping, very versitile, WELL MADE, moves rocks with ease, lever, I mean this thing is pretty gnarly. Its midevil dang near, and feels it. Very good weight distribution, feels like you got a robot appendage almost, nice hammered finish, works great in hard or soft soils, perfect rock finder, doesn't beat the tip...just does what its supposed to, no excuses. If I were a foot taller I'd buy another and use 2.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is it a solid piece of steel? Or a two piece?**
A: This is two pieces, with a hollow handle. The description saying "forged in one piece" is generic for their one-piece hammers, and geo picks like the Burpee model. You can confirm this on Estwing's website. ALL their products say "solid American steel" but the description for this GP100 does NOT say "forged in once piece" like it does here on Amazon. There are half a dozen reviews with pictures showing where the hollow handle has become disconnected from the wide round socket in the head piece. Estwing's solid models do not have this clearly visible socket/lip where the head and handle connect, and are smooth tapered.

**Q: New at fossil-hunting - in addition to this hammer, should I consider a smaller Estwing (maybe 13 oz.) for finer work? Thanks.**
A: Hi, we use this for everything. Most fossils are in some type of limestone or shale. This works very well to clear debris and get into the non exposed layers. We use it for fossil and rock hunting.

**Q: Whats the difference between this one, and the hundred dollar one?**
A: $61. , more or less.

**Q: How wide is the spade portion of this tool?**
A: Jimmy, I measured mine and it's 2/14 wide. A buddy of mine has one and I used it and liked it so much that I went and bought my own.Glad I did, it's a great pick. It's not anything like those heavy clunky things I'm used to.Hope this helps.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good tool if you need one!
*by W***N on April 18, 2026*

Estwing has always had reliable tools over the years, very few complaints in almost 50 years of service. This is on par with their other products. Feels good in the hands, good swing, single or double handed use, works as intended. Should make a good zombie weapon if the need arises, lol! Packable, not overly heavy or cumbersome.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent mid-size soil loosener/rock puller/manythings doer pick. Tough as nails.
*by N***E on October 25, 2025*

Excellent/oddball size ideal for "little" swings and scooping, very versitile, WELL MADE, moves rocks with ease, lever, I mean this thing is pretty gnarly. Its midevil dang near, and feels it. Very good weight distribution, feels like you got a robot appendage almost, nice hammered finish, works great in hard or soft soils, perfect rock finder, doesn't beat the tip...just does what its supposed to, no excuses. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not 36 Inches
*by N***D on March 30, 2014*

I just received this pick and I was surprised to find that it was much smaller than I expected. The product dimensions are listed at (as of this review) 36" by 18" by 3", and one of the reviewers claimed that they could use it as a walking stick?! The actual dimensions are 26" by 13.5" by 2.25" (the box was smaller than said dimensions as well). Having noted that point, I think I'm going to really like this pick. I'll update this review once I've had a chance to use it in the field--hopefully my rating will go up to a 5 star. My impressions are that it is well constructed and seems like just about the perfect size for close-quarters digging. If you're going to dig a big hole in flat ground, then this pick is a little too short. If you're digging into a wall or will be digging while kneeling, this should be perfect. Update (5-15-2014) After spending a weekend rockhounding with this, I love it (thus an increase to 5 stars). If I was only able to bring a single tool for any rockhounding trip, this would be it. Here are some notes: -It can completely replace a standard pick except in the case where you are digging in a smaller hole--the head of this pick is pretty long, so it can be difficult to maneuver it in a tighter place. -It is very effective as a pry bar. I noticed zero flex when applying some pretty heavy loading. -It holds its edge well. After taking a serious pounding this weekend, the tip is definitely duller than when I started, but it could be much worse. -The shovel is incredibly convenient -The handle is very tough. So far there's no damage to the handle--I think it might actually hold up in the long run.
