This is stupid (not to mention illegal) as mothballs are a pesticide with very strict usage requirements (read the packaging) and can contaminate groundwater and soil for years. The odor was coming through the cracks in our wooden floor but mostly through the air conditioning vents (I guess he threw a few mothballs in there for good measure).
