The 7m cable draws 55W measured at the plug end and the entire length of the warming part of the cable goes to pleasantly warm to the touch in open air within seconds. This should be more than capable of protecting cold pipes when insulated as directed (I have acquired it to deal with a cluster of 2x22mm and 2x9mm bore pipes running through the unheated loft space). It has no built in thermostat so for automatic protection, use a thermostatic plug (instructions advise setting to come on at 5C).The product itself has a CE-mark tag stating 'Indoor use only' and IPX7 but the instruction sheet talks about using it outdoors and says IPX4. With the rewirable plug and a cable connector that may or may not be waterproof, then the heated cable alone may be IPX7 (submersible up to 1m water) but the electrical feed cannot be more than IPX4 (splashing water from any direction). I would probably not use this outdoors anywhere that is regularly exposed to water even if using an IP67 or similar socket (so probably OK inside a green house or similar but personally I would look for a different product if actually running the cable in the open even with good water protection).Looks like an excellent indoor product at a decent price. Even though the instructions imply outdoor use is an option, I'd go by the label on the cable and a different IP67 rated product might be a better choice. In the photo I have rewound the cable by hand - it did arrive neatly wound and with some cable ties (may need a few more with the 7m cable). I cannot vouch for how long it will last as it's only been live for a short time now but it feels robust enough where it counts. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ WATER STILL RUNNING *by N***R on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 April 2013* Bought a long length of this to wrap around the alcathine (plastic) water pipe going into our lambing shed as it has frozen most years, meaning a lot of extra work. Installed this under some insulation, and has done the job superbly - no frozen pipes so far.It needs to be used in conjunction with a thermostat power socket, ideally set to plus 4 degrees to come on, as that is the temperature at which the molecular structure of water changes (so I'm told!) ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent product.
