It's removable, but I wish it velcroed on top and bottom so it doesn't slide all around. This massager is nice for my back, but I wish it had two sets of rollers, to get more surface area. However, it does really work my tight upper back/shoulders. I find that I can use it on different surfaces for different intensity in addition to the built in setting. For example, laying it on the floor vs a chair vs my bed. The heat is really nice, but the vibration is loud and kind of weird.
