Once clamped you then just take the black crayon piece and rub it across the paper to get the etching. Then you can remove the etching and color as you want. We ended up using both the paper that came with the kit and using full printer paper and both worked. The paper that comes with it is smaller cut so it fits a bit better but regular paper does work so even if you run out you can continue the fun.
