It is a sugar and can be easily mixed into wet food - my cat liked the taste, which is a little sweet. It keeps bacteria from adhering to bladder walls and it really helped my beloved cat who had kidney disease. Once I started using this, he never blocked again. I used it sparingly since this is human grade - and not every day. Only used if I saw him strain or be in the box too long, then used for several days til he felt better. One could probably use it more frequently. check with your veterinarian and if your vet doesn't know about the wonders of D-mannose, shame on them! They should read Tanya's CKD site. That's not where I found out about D-mannose; it was on a vet site, but this is great stuff and you don't need to buy the prescription food if your cat won't eat it.
