The pieces all sit well within each other, saving space. I have used them for many different things. I protect the surface when storing, by using the silicone pad that comes with the set. I was also able to put a metal roasting rack on it while using the silicone pad to protect the pan's surface, and baked some homemade sausage rolls on it. Worked great! Of course the loaf pan works wonderfully well for meatloaf and bread, and the like. The surface is not delicate, but I like to protect the beautiful surface, so I bought some silicone knives to use when I choose to leave something on or in the pan when slicing. These pans are so easy to clean! My only complaint is that it does not come with two loaf pans of the same size, so if I want to make two loaves of bread at a time, I don't have two pans of the same size, and as far as I know, I cannot buy an individual pan, but I have not looked on the manufacturers website, so am not sure if that is the case. However, the two different loaf pans does give one versatility and as I said, they fit onto the bottom tray perfectly, so are a space saver that way.
