The Tower of Pisa was a work of art,performed in three stages over a period of about 177 years.rted in the year 1173 by Bonanno Pisano.Although intended to stand vertically,the tower began leaning to the souteast soon after the onset of construction due to a poorly laid foundation and loose substrate that has allowed the foundation to shift direction.The tower presently leans to the southwest.The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the piazza's crowning glory.Although only a third as high as the Washington Monument,it was a miracle of medieval engineering,probably the tallest bell towers in Europe.
