So you wouldn't be able to use it on pavement, either. It's a substantial umbrella, well made. I love it. **Q: What support is there for this product? One of the sticks in the umbrella broke after the third use.** A: I don't believe there is any support or replacement piece for this umbrella. On Youtube, there are sites that tell how to replace the stick or rib. However, where I live, we have wind almost every day, so I could not use this umbrella very much, even with the vents. Instead, I bought an adjustable Sport Versa Brella with a Universal Clamp, removed the cloth and removed the rib holders. I cut a piece of thin polyester in a large circle and loosely draped it over the ribs. I wanted something the wind would sail past, not grab like a cup or a kite. I pulled the fabric tight crosswise (rib to rib), then reattached the rib holders. The fabric drapes from rib to rib and the umbrella collapses nicely and fits in its carrying case. You might be able to do this with the Shadebuddy, even with the rib that's broken, if you choose not to replace the rib. I've used the Versa Brella with replaced top quite a few times this past month in wind while painting, and the only time it blew over was the time is also brew over an empty camp chair! So I'm very happy with it. **Q: Can someone please tell me the diameter of the pole and if it could be inserted into a 3 legged tripod base so it could be used on hard surfaces?** A: It's wider than a tripod, however, using a large drill bit, the hole at the middle could be widened. Or the pole could be attached to the tripod with double sided Velcro. I won't be at my art studio for a week, so I can't measure the pole. **Q: what's the thickness of the umbrella whitn collapsed store? We’ll made, and I bought this one that attaches into the ground. If a strong wind comes up, the umbrella might fly off but it will NOT pull my pachyderm box and paints up into the air with it (which I’ve seen happen when painters attach the umbrella to the standing painter’s box or easel). ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Better than Expected *by B***Y on July 16, 2016* I wasn't sure what to expect from this umbrella. The reviews were pretty mixed. I was given an Amazon gift card and I had been looking at this umbrella for my plein air painting excursions, so I decided to use my gift card on this umbrella. Before taking it on trips, I've been trying it out in my backyard on what I call my "Backyard Paintings". I am really happy with the way it works and the stability. Usually the first thing I do in looking for a plein air painting spot, is look for shade. With the umbrella, I have many more choices of where to paint. The days I have used it have been calm. It doesn't make much since to put up an umbrella in the wind but I know that wind bursts can come up unexpectedly. I purchased two metal tent stakes and a bungee cord to reinforce the pole in case of unexpected wind. I also got empty cardboard toilet paper tubes, cut them in half, and inserted in several of the vents in the umbrella so that if the wind picked up, it would hopefully go through the vents easier.So far, no complaints.Over a year since the above review: I've been using the Shadebuddy for over a year now and I'm still happy with it. If you're going to step away from your easel for even just a minute, be sure and take it down.
