You could say it's a historical novel, a tale of prophecy pitted against politics, of a boy growing into his divine calling. It is all these things, and beautifully so. But beyond all that, 'The Lamp of Darkness' is an inspired revelation, opening our eyes to immense Biblical themes, and unfolding wondrous theological concepts, even with echoes for our times. Here are a few:"Pitting fear against fear will not bring us the goal we seek.""The soul is a spark, but sparks do not shine in the bright light of day. As darkness deepens, the soul reveals its hidden light.""Could any of us survive in a world where we receive that which we deserve?... We are all vessels for the light of the Holy One. As we expand mercy in ourselves, it expands in the world."The story unfolds through the eyes of Lev, a shepherd boy with a gift for music. His skills with the kinnor, a type of lyre, bring him in service to the prophets of Israel, thence to the wedding of King Ahab to Jezebel. He bears witness to Jezebel's installation of her heathen cults, to Elijah's famed denouncement of the king with the prophecy that no rain would fall but by his word, and to the Queen's war on the prophets.It's high-stakes high drama and wonderfully executed. The author brings the Bible story to life in a way I never thought possible. I strongly recommend you buy the second book in the series too. While the names of the characters may not seem familiar at times as they are written in their more historical Hebraic way, there is a glossary if you are not sure of the term or name used.
