Review: Get a pair of these before spending big bucks on "prescription" hearing aids not too bad - Let me begin with a small confession. When my primary care doctor noticed some hearing loss at my annual physical, I did what responsible, mature adults do. I went to the ENT. I nodded thoughtfully. I sat through the testing. I agreed that yes, perhaps the world had grown slightly muffled. What I did not realize was that the follow-up appointment was less “medical consultation” and more “luxury automotive sales experience,” except instead of a German sedan, we were discussing hearing aids priced somewhere between five and six thousand dollars. They were small. They were discreet. They were technologically impressive. They were also the cost of a respectable used car. I tried them. I blinked at the quote. I decided to wait. A friend of mine mentioned he had purchased a set of low-cost, over-the-counter hearing aids for under a hundred dollars and was perfectly satisfied. Naturally, I was skeptical. I assumed the difference would be night and day. It was not. These inexpensive hearing aids use a built-in DSP chip that enhances speech and reduces background noise. Are they miracle devices? No. But in actual day-to-day life, they amplify conversations, make television dialogue clearer, and significantly reduce the “what did you say?” factor. The dreaded whistling and squeaking is minimal. Voices are noticeably more intelligible. And here is the surprising part: in practical use, they work about as well as the high-priced ones I tested. The expensive pair was smaller. Yes. More refined. Certainly. But the improvement in performance was not proportional to the additional several thousand dollars. These also function as Bluetooth earbuds. That means I can stream calls, music, or podcasts directly to them. So instead of looking like someone wearing medical devices, I look like everyone else walking around with earbuds in. Which, frankly, is most of the population. The irony is delightful. The premium hearing aids I tried were tiny and discreet, but unmistakably “hearing aids.” These, while slightly larger, blend right into modern life. People assume you are listening to a podcast. Or ignoring them. Both are socially acceptable. Comfort is better than expected. They are lightweight, come with multiple ear dome sizes, and once seated properly, they are stable. The battery life is excellent. Around eighteen hours on a charge, with a quick recharge time and a charging case that even includes a basic dehumidification function. That matters if you live somewhere warm or wear them all day. Controls are simple. One button manages volume levels and noise reduction modes. No app required. No complicated programming session. Just adjust and go. Are these perfect? No. They are not as miniature as the $5,000 options. The materials feel consumer-grade rather than medical-device-grade. Fine tuning is limited to preset modes rather than custom audiologist calibration. But here is the essential question: Are they worth trying before you sign a multi-thousand-dollar contract? Absolutely. For moderate age-related hearing loss, these have been more than adequate. Conversations are clearer. Television is enjoyable without blasting the volume. Phone calls are intelligible. And I did not have to finance them. If you are in that awkward in-between stage, where hearing is diminished but not catastrophic, it makes tremendous sense to test an affordable OTC solution first. You may find, as I did, that the difference between hundreds and thousands is not nearly as dramatic as you were led to believe. And if nothing else, you will look less like a patient and more like someone deeply immersed in a podcast about modern culture. That alone is worth something.
Review: Works great, bought another! - This worked so well that I bought another for my brother! I have the more costly professional ones that costs thousands but didn't have bluetooth capabilities and just needed some simple alternatives for listening to music and can easily switch to hearing mode without having to switch devices. I've tried many in the pasts even the more expensive ones that supposedly works like these, but returned them all because the sound amplification made it harder for me to hear and keep up with conversations since it amplified background noise more than speech. I'm happy that I finally found something that works well enough for me to keep up with conversations. Compared to my professional ones, I'd say these worked 50% as good in quiet environments, and might even be better than my professional ones in noisy environments because it doesn't pick up as much background noise. Perhaps it's better at suppressing the background noise. I was also concerned with the earplug style because those tends to make your own voice sound awkward when speaking. I guess, because the earplugs are very thin, it doesn't create the box effect hence my voice sounded more natural to me. I also liked that these have push buttons rather than the touch kind. My biggest issue with the touch kind is oftentimes, you had to touch it several times for it to register and that can be annoying. With these, it's a mechanical click, so it's much easier to tell. 1 weird thing about this click mode is that a quick click will switch programs rather than change volume. You have to hold the button down for about 2 seconds for it to change volume up. Operations that are done often, such as volume control, should be the quicker click. Changing programs isn't done often, so holding it down for 2 seconds to switch programs would make more sense. I also discovered an operation that wasn't in the users manual. What I noticed was that, if you disconnect the device from bluetooth while using it, you might have trouble reconnecting it after because it's not in the pairing state anymore. You have to put it back in the case, maybe wait a few seconds, then take it out. During that short period, you'll hear the prompt pairing, and that's when it'll switch back to pairing mode and will be able to connect via bluetooth again. The trick that I found was that you can switch the device to pairing mode if you double-click the buttons. If it wasn't already connected via bluetooth, it'll say pairing and enters the pairing mode, just like when you pull it out of its case. This is much more convenient than having to put it back in its case and pulling it back out again.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good given the price, get that app fixed!
*by G***K on December 3, 2025*

I bought an Elehear Beyond earlier in the year. I'm grading this on its own as I expected the Elehear to be better. It is, I'm sure the average $80,000 car has more features than a $20,000 car. In general, this makes a good backup. It has two advantages over the Elehear. It squeals less, and it charges better. The Elehear, being a traditional hearing aid sometimes lifts away from its magnetic charging points because of the wires making the earpieces pull one or both earpieces away. This snaps in and when it's in the box it always charges. However, it has a number of shortcomings compared to the Elehear. Understandable given the price difference. It works as both a bluetooth speaker and a hearing. I'd give it a B for listening to podcasts and a C as a hearing aid. Probably better than most sub $100 hearing device (bought mine like-new used, no complaints on that). There's an app available which isn't mentioned in the description or manual. The app connected to my hearing aid but didn't function. No mode adjustment and a volume control which didn't work. It did show battery level but that was about it. I removed the app. I'm not even sure whether the on-ear buttons work, volume and mode don't seem to make much difference although I can hear them beeping. A "real" hearing aid has a smaller ear piece and wax blockers which need to be replaced monthly. These are larger. have no blockers and are less comfortable in my ears. They do function, I found my Elehears didn't charge today because of connection problems in the box. I put these in and got through the day just fine. If the Elehears run out of juice after twelve hours of use, I stick these in for an hour or two at night. As a backup, I'm pleased with this purchase. Four stars given the price, if it had a useful Android app I'd give it an extra star. (Reinstalled app, took online hearing test and made meaningful volume adjustment. Still not enough to give it five stars-pretty crude- but works better):still four stars but closer to five.)
