I just finished reading Inside Mercedes F1 by Matt Whyman, and as a dedicated F1 fan who’s read many books about the sport, this one left a unique impression. The narrative is well-crafted and offers a rare glimpse into the team, but there’s an unexpected tone that permeates the story—a sense of “invisible fear” that might reflect the pressures inside a large corporate entity like Mercedes. Whyman does a great job capturing the complexity of Toto Wolff’s leadership, and Shov, Allison and Dean’s supportive yet demanding role. However, the portrayal of Mercedes sometimes feels like it belongs in a dark sci-fi epic, reminiscent of a corporate empire straight out of Star Wars. Whether this was intentional or an unconscious choice, it hints at the underlying struggles that may have impacted the team’s performance, especially after Hamilton’s loss to Max Verstappen.
