Heat seems to be the key to getting rid of the smell.The blanket was softer than I expected and fits a queen bed perfectly. I thought thought that I would overheat at night using this blanket, but that wasn't the case, so I'm quite happy that I purchased this item. The lint trap for my dryer had a good amount of lint after drying, but that's what I expected for a cotton blanket.I deducted one star from the rating because of two things. The first was that the zipper bag the blanket arrived in was badly broken, leaving the blanket exposed to any hazard. After inspecting the blanket, it looked OK, so I decided to keep it, but it certainly should not have been shipped to a customer in that condition.Secondly after washing and drying (cold and dried on low as directed by the label), the blanket had a petroleum smell. Before washing, I specifically smelled the blanket and there was no petroleum smell. The smell was activated after washing and was still present after drying on low. So I rewashed using a higher temperature and the smell was still present. I dried using a higher heat (on my dryer it was the "heavy" setting) and as a result much of the petroleum smell was gone, but you could still detect it. I expect the residual petroleum smell to dissipate over time or the next time I wash and dry it using the higher temperatures than the care label specifies. So it looks like the heat from drying dissipates the petroleum smell and washing has little effect.
