## Overview

The Teayumi Hagi Yaki Koji teacup is a 9x7 cm handmade ceramic cup crafted in Japan using a special blend of four clays and a natural wood ash glaze. Fired at 1400°C for 20 hours, it boasts unique color variations and a signature triangular base mark. Over time, its glaze develops a distinctive Craquelure pattern, making each cup a personal, evolving work of art deeply rooted in Japanese tea culture.

## Description

The art of Hagi pottery was introduced to Japan in 1604 by the artisan brothers Chak-Kwang and I Kyung, during the invasion of Korea. Initially, the special firing technique was only used for the production of rice bowls. Due to the increasing popularity of the quest for the aesthetic of imperfection and simplicity, Hagi-Yaki ceramics were in demand from tea masters throughout Japan. Hagi-Yaki became an integral part of Japanese tea culture. In the production of Hagi-Yaki ceramics, four different quartz / kaolin and ferrous clays are mixed. Due to the special clay mixture and glaze, which carries a high proportion of wood ash, the blue, pink, grey and orange shades are created. The individual glazing effects occur during the twenty-hour burning process, at a heat of up to 1400 °C in the Hagi kilns. As the drinking vessels are used, tannins settle in the pores of the pottery, gradually accentuating the popular Craquelure pattern. Another characteristic feature of Hagi ceramics is the base of the vessels. Before firing, a small triangle is slotted in the bottom of the vessel. This allows the trained eye to recognise the clays, and distinguish the original from the counterfeit.
