Cleopatra comes to Heathrow but Maggie Smith and Margaret Rutherford take the Acting Credits !

*by L***Y on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 August 2015*

I loved this movie, which was a huge box office success, when I saw it as a kid in 1963, and decades later, it totally retains its charm for me. I've given it five stars, even though I thought it was a bit long at two hours, and some of the scenes between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, are too drawn out, despite the real life chemistry between them. But apart from that, this variation on Grand Hotel, set in the VIP lounge at Heathrow Airport is highly entertaining and absorbing for the following reasons:* A dramatic, but witty script by Terence Rattigan, about a group of rich passengers stranded by fog at the airport, and the heartaches and tensions they suffer as a result. But it still generates a palpable feelgood factor, and I just sat back and soaked up the 60s glamour of it all.* A star-studded, glamorous cast, who are very good, but sometimes out-acted by the supporting actors* The gorgeous outfits by Givenchy (Taylor wears a fur-lined raincoat to die for) and superb 1960s sets, all filmed in gorgeous Metrocolor* Liz Taylor's Cleopatra look, with the dramatic feline eye make-up that became her trademark* The widescreen aspect (Panavision), which is preserved on this DVD and makes everything seem even more glamorous* An Academy Award winning performance from Margaret Rutherford as the impoverished dotty Duchess hoping to get a job in Miami. She calls the air stewardess 'conductress', and when asked to fasten her seatbelt explains that she hasn't brought one with her* An equally memorable performance from Maggie Smith as the diffident but practical secretary to Rod Taylor's worried businessman - if only they could have given two Oscars for supporting actresses! (Her scene with the brilliant Burton is the best thing in the movie.)* A great print and sound qualityNote: this is a Spanish import, but it's very easy to switch to English, without subtitles

One of the great films of the 1960s. Exceptional cast including Oscar winner Margaret Rutherford. For. For some reason it is hard to find.Wherever you find it buy it, it’s worth every penny.

An era long gone - more is the pity

*by M***N on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 August 2014*

I know I shouldn't buy these films - they remind me of an era long gone - more is the pity, but as Oscar Wilde said: "I can resist anything except temptation". The story revolves around the great and the not so good, when men wore hats and ties, women looked like women (Please forgive my sexist remark in such a more enlightened???!!! time as now) and tattoos had yet to make their indelible mark... After a good dinner settle down and watch an eclectic star studded cast play out their interesting and yes, though it breaks my heart to say it - privileged lives while fog - bound in the original Terminal 3 of Heathrow Airport (I think cunningly re-created as a film set, to allow Richard Burton/Elizabeth Taylor to take centre stage, ably supported by Margaret Rutherford, Maggie Smith, Rod Taylor etc). On a lesser note; the film reminds me of Heathrow Airport in the 60's as a child (No I'm not from a privileged background - my parents knew the value of thrift) when there was true glamour in travel and people (Most of them anyway) from all backgrounds (Even in the film!) knew how to behave. Please, I implore you; call me terribly old fashioned: There's not a "hip" four letter word uttered throughout. I'd better stop, I knew it, I'm starting to depress myself and possibly others as well?
