Review: Better as a Stand Alone Figure Than an Armorizer - If you’re considering a (Rock Lords) Infernac universe Transformers figure, this is the one. The various green colors work well together and the figure looks nice in both modes. Additionally, I find that if one removes the blades from the helicopter mode it appears to have a submarine aesthetic. I almost want a conning tower plug-in for the rotor assembly to complete the submarine visual. What Hasbro got right with this figure is a more appropriate usage of transparent plastics. There are two separate canopy window inserts which are mounted into sturdier, more traditional plastics and they look marvelous. Shard also has light piping which provides some haunting green glow to the figure’s eyes. One of the transparent plastic window inserts aid this light piping effect allowing light to pass through the figure’s backpack. Many figures in these current Hasbro Transformers lines have hollow spaces which detract from the feeling of the figure’s completeness. However, Shard has minimal hollowness of the ‘five-walled-cube’ variety. He does have some gaps though, both calves and forearms. There are some features I don’t like about this mold. The arms are somewhat cantankerous to align into alt mode, a tight fit to align but not a tab-slot problem. The arms will often detach from the figure during transformation (don’t worry as they simply tab in as a part of the armorizer gimmick). Then there are the blades which have a single vertical spline along the tab. This spline hampers the usage of the blades as swords. Completely true unless one prefers the sword pointed as a straight extension from the arm as in a thrusting orientation. These single splines are meant to tab into the star spline receptical in each turbine/arm cannon. Additionally, as an armorizer the figure’s head, torso, tail, waist and thighs don’t lend themselves to armoring other figures. I feel there is a missed opportunity to have placed a 5 mm tab on the flat section below the cockpit area. Once the legs are removed, this central part of Shard’s alt mode could become a backpack to attach to other figures. This missed backpack opportunity could have used the tail as a communications antenna with above-the-head turret mounts formed from the waist and thighs. But alas no! Besides other figures may or may not have a port on their backs to use this missed backpack opportunity. However, it could have been a simple inclusion if it would have worked at all. Some figures already have large backpack kibble due to their engineering. Overall Shard is a well done deluxe figure that feels sturdy in the hand. Its friction joints are firm and the figure doesn’t feel floppy. The transformation is fairly simple and interesting. As a new character to the Transformers universe, this armorizer is fun, but works much better as an individual figure.
