It is a form of vitamin K2 which is created from natto, a soy product, via a special process of fermentation. Scientific research has indicated that this form of vitamin K is much more usable in the body than vitamin K1, which is found in vegetables such as spinach.This is not the only brand of MK-7 I have tried. I also use MK-7 from Jarrow. The dosage of this supplement is 300 mcg per tablet. I personally find that to be a very high dose. Recommendations for ideal dosage varies from 45 mcg per day up to 200 mcg. I haven't personally read a recommendation to take a dosage of 300 mcg. For that reason, to me personally, this product is a bit of overkill. The excess won't harm you, but you are paying extra money for excess dosage you don't need.Note that MK-7 can be taken with food or on an empty stomach.Below I have included information on MK-7 in general, which some consumers might find of interest.MK-7 helps promote bone health by helping the body naturally--with no side effects--to build bone, which is an essential factor in preventing osteoporosis. It is advised to take it along with vitamin D3 at a dosage of between 1000-5000 mg per day and, of course, calcium and magnesium, to help maintain bone health. Additional helpful supplements for protecting and enhancing bones are boron, strontium and silica. Additionally, it's crucial to engage in regular, weight-bearing exercise, such as walking or lifting weights or simply jumping up and down at least 20 times per day.Using these supplements and exercise, which have no negative side effects, stands in strong contrast to Big Pharma's "bone-protecting" drugs. They, in fact, do NOT build bone. The drugs doctors most often prescribe for a DEXA-based diagnosis of "osteopenia" are from a class called "antiresorptives." These drugs attempt to slow bone loss by decreasing the rate of absorption of bone by osteoclast cells. Examples include: bisphosphonates (Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel, Reclast), calcitonin (Fortical and Miacalcin), estrogen therapy or hormone therapy (Premarin, Prempro), and estrogen agonists/antagonists (Evista).There's a huge problem with these drugs, over and beyond their dangerous side effects. Stopping resorption works entirely against the body's bone-maintenance system. In a natural state (untampered with by drugs), there is a constant uptake by osteoclast cells of old bone tissue (resorption) which triggers a signal to the osteoblast cells to create new bone tissue. Both sides of the equation are essential for new bone to be created. In short, if there is no resorption of old bone by osteoclasts, then the osteoblasts will NOT make any new bone. This means that if I were to ever make the grave mistake of taking bisphosphonates, my body would cease making any new bone.My conclusion is this: Yes, during the relatively short-term testing of two years or less Big Pharma has done on these drugs, it has concluded and proclaimed that bone is spared, rather than lost. I've tried a couple other brands, and I really like that the capsules are so small. They don't cause stomach upset and that's important. I take these to help keep up my bone density and to fight inflammation that stems from severe degenerative osteoarthritis, disc disease, and extensive nerve damage. There are times when I have forgotten to order another bottle of K2, and the difference in mobility is noticeable. I go from being able to do function closer to 'normal' to needing extra time to even get out of bed. My doc and I agree that taking this supplement is a more preferable option to having to ingest additional pain meds.
