Next time someone forwards a mail saying "MH 370" and "Diego Garcia"

*by M***M on Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2014*

This handy book is a good and clear headed conjecture into the likely fate of MH 370 and in a world where every conspiracy theorist has gone wild stringing together Freescale Semiconductors, Diego Garcia Military Base, shapeshifting royal family lizards and the Mossad - CIA axis, it's a breath of fresh air to read a well researched account that logically and methodically eliminates what couldn't have happened and in the end posits a theory that is quite likely what will be proved correct if and when the remnants of the missing plane are found.Put simply, the authors build up the chronology of events as they happened and analyse publicly available data from radars, satellites and other sources to understand the sequence of events as they happened. The key point is to realize that MH 370 made 8 changes of direction during its first 3 hours of flight, signifying that someone was deliberately flying the plane in that fashion and thus ruling out bombs or any explosive decompression. Secondly, the very deliberate acts of switching off all the primary as well as backup communication systems of the plane clearly show that no malfunction is likely to have taken place as a modern 777 has enough and more backup systems to compensate for 1-2 frontline modules failing. Hijacking is also very unlikely as a hijackers primary aim is to attract attention and the silent 'ghost' flight would defeat that very purpose. Lastly, the fact that the plane flew for 8 hours after take off rules out a fire on board as planes that are aflame usually crash in 20 minutes.By process of elimination then, deliberate pilot action emerges as the default answer. Much as it may horrify us to contemplate, there have been earlier cases of pilots crashing their own aircraft, in particular, Egypt Air 990 and Silk Air 185. The authors then put forward a scenario where they show how the pilot could have achieved this. The pilot could have depressurised the cabin at high altitude leaving only 30 seconds of reaction time and even those who put their masks on would have had their oxygen run out in 30 minutes. It is quite likely then, in the last 5 hours of its flight, MH 370 was a ghost flight (like the well documented case of Helios Airways 522 though there the depressurization was involuntary) and the captain, who might have been unconscious or might have repressurized the plane after ensuring everyone else was in a hypoxic coma might have been in control at the end to ditch the flight. The scenario drawn up by the authors is compelling and I must confess, I was inclined to believe it even before I read the book since all the logical signs point towards it. However, the method by which the authors arrive at this finding will probably convince most people that the pilot suicide theory is the most probable at present (NOTE: I said 'probable', I realize nothing is conclusive till we find the plane). The constituency of the professional conspiracy theorist is of course unlikely to be swayed as are probably those who find the very thought of a pilot being callous enough to take 230 innocent people along with him too overwhelming. Yet, I think those who are open to reason will be convinced and I think acknowledging this possibility will also provide some closure to the grieving families. My heart goes out to them because they are forced to live with the consequences of one man's irrational actions. The one weakness of this book is that while it attempts to get inside the head of the pilot, as the authors acknowledge, he was a man not too many people know well and reading this book, I didn't get a conclusive insight into the kind of man he was and what were the circumstances in his personal or professional life that led him to commit this act. There is some talk of marital disturbance, some anecdotes of a less than ideal relationship with the kids but nothing that points in the direction of what may have compelled him to do such a thing. I fear that even if we do find the plane and determine that pilot actions were the cause of the crash, the reasons why he did so are something that Captain Zaharie may well have forever taken to the grave.

This was a very interesting and informative book. The author seems to have done a lot of research on his facts and presented itin his view which easily seems probable that was what caused the plane to go missing.

A compelling and believable version of what likely happened to MH370

*by E***S on Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2014*

While it's definitely hard to believe, and my hope is that it isn't true, the authors do a pretty convincing job at explaining that MH370 was brought down by pilot suicide. Sure, there are various other possibilities for the disappearance of this aircraft, however, after reading the book, the only likely scenario is that it was the pilot who brought down the plane on purpose.Even if the remains of the aircraft are found, it will be difficult to come up with a 100% certain cause for the demise of this fly by wire aircraft. The black boxes aren't likely to prove anything one way or the other. It's through the process of elimination that the most likely cause of this tragedy was the pilots desire to end his life.If the above turns out to be true, how terribly sad this is. If the pilot did indeed want to commit suicide, he could have done so without involving hundreds of other helpless souls. If ever proven, this will go down as one of the largest cases of mass murder in world history. Personally, I don't believe that a cause will ever be found, but as mentioned above, it appears highly probable that this was a planned suicide by the pilot and no one else. This was a very interesting read from start to finish.
