They have a threaded portion that is affixed from underneath with a nut and a wing shaped washer. Sorry if there is a correct term for this? There is a small spanner supplied that fits in a slot in the bolt at the top. If you get your hand above the soil pipe and hold the nut you can tighten it from above. The seat is a quick release. By pressing two buttons it slots in and off the bolts. Mine was a warehouse deal item and the nuts and washers were missing.
