Review: Monsta X's strongest release to date - Monsta X: a K-Pop group that incorporate a fair bit of Hip-Hop, and considering I'm not a huge fan of most Hip-Hop, they've got to be doing something right for me to be such a fan of them. I've only recently discovered Monsta X, so The Connect is my first MX comeback, and of all their albums, this one definitely feels the strongest and most consistent to me. There are four versions of the album available - each one with a different cover and containing a different photobook (I got Ver. 1). Inside you'll find the photobook, and two randomly picked photocards (I got a group one, and another of I.M.) I also received a poster, a bunch of photocards from previous MX albums, and the seller even sent two packets of Korean green tea! On the album, you'll find seven tracks: 1) Jealousy - More Pop-oriented than a lot of MX's previous title tracks. Jealousy's sound reminds me a lot of 90s Pop, as does the music video. The choreography to this song is brilliant, and the chorus is really catchy! 2) Destroyer - A much more sombre piece than Jealousy, I heard a fair amount of Destroyer in the run-up to the album's release, and I had a feeling I would really enjoy this one. Turns out I wasn't wrong, and Destroyer could easily shine as a title track. 3) Fallin' / Heavy Rain - This song incorporates a lot of EDM, which again I'm not a fan of most of the time. Yet, Fallin' is one of the biggest highlights from the album. Jooheon and I.M. really stand out on this track, and I can't help but find the accompanying music incredibly catchy. 4) Crazy In Love / Because I'm Crazy - Probably my favourite track from this album. This one starts out slow and sombre like Destroyer, but once it reaches the chorus, it really sparks into life. Shownu and Kihyun really let their vocals loose on this one, and the song is all the better for it. 5) Lost In The Dream - This one continues a similar kind of feel as the previous track, but still does enough to stand out on repeat listens. A lot of people seem to enjoy this one, and it's not hard to see why. 6) If Only - Shownu kicks the song off with some incredibly pristine vocals, and soon enough you get Jooheon singing too, and I always welcome hearing him sing as opposed to just rapping. Wonho's lyrics have a lot of meaning packed into them, and my fave Hyungwon even gets to show off his voice as the song draws to a close. 7) Special - This song did a great job at tricking me. It started off with a choral kind of sound, and I thought we were in for something profound to round the album off ... until Jooheon cuts in and starts rapping with enough fire in his voice that he sounds like he's about to kill someone (no change there then). This is another brilliant song and another of my favourites from this album! The Connect is the first physical album I've bought from Monsta X, and it's definitely their most consistent release. Songs like Hero, Beautiful, Dramarama, Need U or White Love will always be my favourites from Monsta X, but as a full album, this is the group's strongest release to date.
Review: Great Album! - Daughter Loves Monsta X Albums! Great to listen to after the London Concert recently. Korean photo books that come with the cds are a lovely keepsake. Why don’t UK artists follow suit??
